Heritage in Motion: Sustainable Low-Carbon Living Secondary 2 Cross-Curricular Tour

Date of Event:31 March 2025 (Tuesday)
Time:8:00 AM – 1 PM
Target Students:Secondary 2

1. Rationale and Background

As Hong Kong rapidly modernises, it is vital for students to appreciate the historical and cultural significance of our city's legacy transportation systems: the Star Ferry and the Hong Kong Tramways ("Ding Ding"). This cross-curricular tour between the English and CES departments will allow Secondary 2 students to step outside the classroom and explore Hong Kong Island. The tour focuses on the cultural heritage, economic evolution, and environmental sustainability of these iconic modes of public transport.

2. Cross-Curricular Learning Objectives

Citizenship, Economics and Society (CES) Objectives:

  • Cultural Heritage: Understand the historical development of the Star Ferry and Tramways and their role in shaping Hong Kong Island's identity.
  • Economic Development: Analyse how these affordable transport systems contributed to the early economic growth of Victoria Harbour and the northern coast of HK Island.
  • Sustainability: Evaluate the environmental benefits of trams (zero roadside emissions) and discuss the challenges and solutions for modernising legacy transport (e.g., hybrid/electric ferries) in an era of climate change.

English Department Objectives:

  • Vocabulary Acquisition: Learn specific vocabulary related to urban planning, environmental sustainability, heritage preservation, and public transport.
  • Practical Writing: Gather field notes to draft a travel blog post on how to preserve these transport systems for the future.
