Newman Catholic Murder Mystery Week 20-23 April

Date: 20-23/04/2026
Highlights:

This last week has been filled with mystery and suspense as the students became detectives helping out the NCPD (Newman Catholic Police Department) to solve the crime and find out who killed Tim.
The young detectives began the investigation by investigating the crime scene. They saw a dead body, birthday crumbs, a birthday card, a button, cups and plates. Students had to study the scene, look for clues and decipher what had happened. Students took photos of every corner, some students from 4E3 tried to calculate the angles from which the dead body was lying to figure out from which angle or under what circumstance was the fatal blow made. Many detectives were also keen to join the party and try the cake- but were clever not to make the mistake- seeing as it could have been poisoned!
After investigating the crime scene, students went back to their offices, which were located in their usual classrooms. In the office detectives worked in department teams of 4/5 to investigate by looking into the clues and coming up with questions that needed to be answered in order for the crime to be solved. One curious student from 3D, Ella for example asked who is Ella, and decided there was no way that she could have been the perpetrator, especially as they had shared the same name!
Since the murder was very fresh, students only had two pieces of evidence-the first was the crime scene and the second was a phone call between one of the suspects (Ella) and the police. The detectives listened to the latter and wrote down key information from the call, including the time of the call, the address, who was at the party, when people left the party etc. All students were listening closely to find out more information on this mysterious case.
After the phone call, the detectives received a family tree, where they could visualize the people who were at the party and their connection to the victim, Tim. Many detectives such as the students in 5E3 were suspicious of the ‘friend’ Ben who was the only non- blood relative on the tree, and were curious as to his relation to Tim and the rest of the family.
Once students investigated the family tree, detectives were left to their own devices and were asked to come up with some questions to ask the chief detective, who could go and investigate further for them.
Many students across the school had realized that all the information we knew was from one source – Ella, thus, we needed to know more information about the other suspects, such as Mrs. Chan and Ben. Because of this, many detectives across the school including the students in 3B such as Katon and Jasmine asked for proof on the whereabouts of these individuals at the time of the murder.
Officer Jazz interviewed Mrs. Chan. Mrs. Chan disclosed that she went to the shops at the time of the murder and handed in a receipt from Park n Shop that was within 40 minutes of the time of the murder. We then asked the detectives to investigate the evidence and see whether the evidence provided was enough proof to suggest that Mrs. Chan she was in the shop at the time of the murder.
Many of the students looked at the time and the address, including Samuel and Cayden from 1D who noticed that the time and the address was suspicious. Many of the detectives tried to look deeper into the evidence that was handed in including Hazel from 1D and Evan from 3D, who analysed the website written on the receipt to try and find extra clues. A lot of students concluded that the receipt was suspicious and did not trust it a reliable alibi.
Detectives also wondered about the whereabouts of Ben at the time of the murder. Karson and Jimmy from 3A asked me to also interview Ben. However, Ben was not very responsive in the interview. Considering the severity of the case, we decided to check Ben’s phone. On his phone students found incriminating voice notes including a voice note of Ben sent to a close friend 10 minutes after the murder. The voice note disclosed Ben wanting to talk to Tim (the victim at the night of the murder), about the late Mr. Chan’s money. This led to students to ask what was meant, so we investigated deeper in to this, and looked at Mr. Chan’s will, which disclosed that when he deceased, he would give all his property and wealth to his nephew Tim.
This meant a lot of students including Shirley from S4 and Ms. Pang to theorise it could be Ella, who knew that the inheritance would pass to Ella after Tim died.
Other students theorized it was still Ben because of the incriminating voice note. Other students suggested it was Ms. Chan because of the alibi not being accurate.
Some students from 1D and 5E3 remembered that we still had access to Ben and Ms. Chan’s phone so asked for us to look further into the chats between the two- which we did.
The WhatsApp messages incriminated both Ben and Mrs. Chan, signaling that there was a plan to hurt Tim. It was revealed that Mrs. Chan was the one who killed Tim, for the inheritance as she felt like the wealth rightfully belonged to her. She did this with the help of Ben, her accomplice, who waited outside and kept an eye out for anyone coming.
It was very interesting to hear everyone’s theory about what had happened on the night of Tim’s death. Out of all the classes, specific groups from the 4A class, 1D class and 5E1 classes were the ones to correctly guess what actually happened on the night of Tim’s death.
